A Forgotten Lesson of History
When it comes to health, small omissions can create large concerns.
Here is an example:
In 19th-Century Vienna, common practice between a hospital’s autopsy center and obstetrics clinic was for doctors performing autopsies to go directly into the maternity ward without washing their hands.
Hungarian doctor, Ignaz Semmelweis noticed mothers there were dying of puerperal or "childbed” fever . bacterial infection of the genital tract, commonly caused by beta hemolytic streptococcus - at a rate 3x higher than mothers using midwives.
He surmised post-autopsy handwashing by doctors would help, and it did, reducing mortality below 1%.
Sadly, his “radical” ideas were rejected by the medical establishment; some doctors took offense at being asked to wash their hands! In 1865, Semmelweis was committed to and died in an insane asylum.
Who is Crazy Here?
Still, it was common medical practice that was crazy, not Semmelweis. He was vindicated by the germ-theory and hygienic advances of Pasteur and Lister. Now antiseptic procedures are the norm.
Common cleaning or disinfecting practices of today often make the same crazy mistake, ignoring the little matter of properly removing or inactivating pathogens and creating large infectious disease problems.
In common practice, spraying and wiping with a chemical disinfectant does not remove or kill germs to a level that is truly safe. There isn’t enough dwell time, and the “cleaning” cloth, even microfiber, often spreads rather than totally removes pathogens (Ref. 1) and (Ref. 2). This may leave an infectious dose, especially for vulnerable persons such as children and the elderly.
In addition, most disinfectants add a hazardous substance to the indoor space, and that’s why EPA-Registered disinfectants are classified as pesticides under FIFRA (Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act).
Disinfectant ingredients may cause sensitivities, asthma, allergies and worse. (Ref. 3)
Crazy by the Numbers
So, let’s define crazy by the numbers:
1. Let’s bring into our homes and businesses a poison that doesn’t work as commonly applied and leaves a substance that can make us sick. 12.6% of people are chemically-sensitive to low-levels of common chemicals per the National Institutes of Health, and 15.9% of people are chemically-sensitive per the California Department of Health Services.
2. Let’s spend many dollars per gallon for a registered pesticide chemistry that is often ineffective when other methods work better for far less $. The Center for Food Security and Public Health estimates a quaternary (quat) disinfectant concentrate costing $68.00 per gallon will cost $0.27 per RTU gallon (0.5 oz. per gallon of water). Though disinfecting 500-sq. ft. costs $1.35, the median size of an elementary school is 85,000 sq. ft. and the average office building built between 2000-2012 is 19,000-sq. ft. (Dept. of Energy, Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey - CBECS).
