Kills the Germs – Not Your Health
According to the CDC’s April 22, 2016 report, “Respiratory Symptoms and Skin Irritation Among Hospital Workers Using a New Disinfection Product”–a “nontoxic” and “one-step” cleaner, disinfectant, and deodorizer product consisting of hydrogen peroxide, peroxyacetic acid, and acetic acid–poses a possible health hazard to workers exposed to it, according to a NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Health) investigation.
According to NIOSH, symptoms among persons who had used the product–44% of workers reported at least one work-related health outcome–included:
- eye and nasal problems
- asthma-like reactions
- shortness of breath
- skin problems
- chest tightness, and
This type of product is being used in more than 500 hospitals nationally, notes CDC; stating the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics recently has listed this product as an asthmagen in its Exposure Database.
“Consideration of the health and safety of workers is prudent when choosing disinfection products, and hospitals should be alert for respiratory, skin, and eye symptoms in environmental services staff members… [and] physicians should be aware of the potential adverse health effects of occupational exposure to cleaning and disinfection products when evaluating patients with respiratory and skin symptoms.”
The Safe Alternative– TANCS® Steam Vapor
TANCS® Steam vapor cleaning can play a vital role in a healthcare infection prevention program. Patented* water-only TANCS Steam vapor cleaning enables rapid disinfection, improves appearance, indoor hygiene, worker/patient safety and indoor air quality; while reducing cross-contamination, odor, expense, and exposure to chemicals. TANCS Steam vapor systems direct low-moisture** (6%) low-pressure 50 to 60 PSI steam–with vapor temperature at the surface between 215 and 230 degrees–to the cleanable areas of fixtures and floors. The energy from hot steam vapor penetrates deeply into porous material and sanitizes and disinfects surfaces thoroughly in seconds not minutes, reaching beyond what can be seen. This heat energy releases embedded residues, reducing the need for scrubbing or chemicals.
